Cup and Cross 1982

Local clay dug from Northumberland was used to make the first horizontal installation. The use of cup forms, raw clay and the horizontal was a critique of the sculpture conventions of the time. There is a mutual dependence between the steel and clay which form a grid to hold the structure together. The female body is referenced in the handling of the clay cups. The emphasis is on touch and the tactile properties of the material.
